Finding sweetness through relationships-- not sweets!

My son Tommy shows me lots of sweetness throughout the day...... along with a lot of saltiness as well!
Finding sweetness through relationships, not all the sweets! Take the challenge! I recently had a party/ open house at my office. I challenged myself to get nourishment through the people that I meet instead of that chocolate covered caramel with sea salt on top! Don't get me wrong.... having that treat is well worth it - IF you can have just a few AND being mindful while enjoying it. However, I know myself well. It is rare for me to eat just 1 or 2 of those. Eating one for me would trigger a night of over-indulgence! So, I found nourishment in the people around me. It worked. It really worked. Give it a try- you will be surprised how great you feel when you are mindful of where you decide to get your sweetness from!

If it came from a plant, eat it: if it was made in a plant, don't.

Don't you just love Michael Pollan! He comes up with some pretty clever titles.... such as the title of this blog! Another one I love is ...." Get out of the supermarket whenever you can."

When shopping at a farmers market you really need to look hard to find items that have more than 5 ingredients. Its also not easy to find items with high fructose corn syrup or food from thousands of miles away. However, what do you do in the winter? Many towns are having indoor markets! I am hoping Racine has one next year! However, Kenosha and Milwakee have indoor markets now..... yippeeeee!

See what Nancy Carlson thinks about farmers markets!

Enjoy the holiday!
My favorite simple holiday treat!
SWEET AND SALTY NUTS
(just like me....a little sweet and a little salty!)
This is SO easy its crazy.
take 3, 4 or 5 kinds of your favorite of nuts (I use organic and raw) but you don't have to!
spread them on a cookie sheet. (its good to use parchment paper for easy clean up!)
drizzle maple syrup on them
bake for 15 min @ 350 (turning 1-2 times)
take them out of the oven and add sea salt to taste!
I gave this as a gift to my dear friends last year for Christmas. It was so fun for me to prepare this knowing I was going to give it to them. I even put them in a cute bag with a decorative ribbon. (I was very proud of myself)
try it, you'll love it!
